Wagga School Leaders Program Module 4

Module 4 of the 2026 Wagga School Leaders Program was held in late May and focused on the theme, “Me and My Place in a Bigger Environment.” The day commenced with discussions around intention setting, encouraging students to reflect on their mindset and goals for the final stages of the program.

A key feature of the morning session was the presentation of the students’ Leadership Shields. Having worked on this task since March, each student was given the opportunity to present their shield to the cohort, sharing the values, experiences and influences that have shaped their leadership journey.

As presentation time approached, students experienced a range of emotions. For some, it was an exciting opportunity to showcase their work, while for others it was a daunting challenge that required them to step outside their comfort zone. Regardless of their level of confidence, every student embraced the opportunity and demonstrated courage, preparation and personal growth.

Following each presentation, students received constructive feedback and practical advice to further enhance their presentation and communication skills. Throughout the program, significant emphasis has been placed on developing these capabilities, with students exploring the power of storytelling, opening with impact, connecting with an audience and refining their delivery techniques. Topics such as voice projection, pitch, pace, pauses, eye contact, facial expressions and content structure have all been incorporated into their learning journey.

Richard Saunders from Enirgi storage and Power Recycling explained the battery recycling process to students and how they process over 60% of all used batteries from right around Australia right there in Bomen!

Students then had the chance to meet with the Mentors for a second time, each time they meet students are matched with a different mentor so they can ask questions and get different advice from each mentor’s professional sectors and their personal experience.

Students also learned about the DISC Model of communication and behaviour, the characteristics of each style as well as effective things to do and what to avoid in communicating with each style. Each participant then self-selected their dominant style.

The afternoon session shifted focus towards preparations for the upcoming graduation ceremony. Students were assigned presentation topics and event responsibilities, before working collaboratively to discuss, plan and develop their contributions to the evening.

The day provided an excellent opportunity for students to reflect on their personal growth while continuing to build the confidence and communication skills that are essential to effective leadership. As graduation approached, there was a growing sense of anticipation and excitement as students prepared to celebrate the culmination of their Wagga School Leaders Program journey.
