Wagga School Leaders Program Module 3

The Wagga School Leaders Program returned to the Transgrid Discovery Hub for Module 3, focusing on “Me and Leadership (Understanding Self)”. The day centred on developing interpersonal skills and increasing students’ awareness of how effective communication contributes to leadership success.

Throughout the module, students explored both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, examining how these skills influence relationships, teamwork and leadership effectiveness. Participants were encouraged to identify opportunities to strengthen their interpersonal skills, build meaningful connections and observe positive interactions in their everyday environments.

A significant highlight of the day was the students’ first meeting with their program mentors. Drawn from local businesses, community organisations and government agencies, mentors generously volunteer their time to support the students throughout the program. By sharing their professional experiences, leadership insights and personal journeys, mentors provide valuable guidance and encouragement as students continue to develop their leadership capabilities.

The mentor sessions generated many valuable discussions and reflections. Students heard the importance of communicating effectively as a leader, maintaining a healthy work-life balance and pursuing career pathways that align with their passions and interests. Mentors reinforced the idea that leadership is not simply about achieving success, but about remaining authentic and purposeful in the choices we make.

One mentor encouraged students to approach life with optimism, challenging them to look for a “diamond” each day, and to take opportunities when they present themselves.  This message resonated strongly with the program’s emphasis on developing a growth mindset, encouraging students to seek opportunities within challenges and remain positive when facing obstacles.

Module 3 provided students with practical leadership tools, meaningful mentor connections and valuable insights into the importance of self-awareness and effective communication in becoming successful leaders.
