Wagga School Leaders Program Module 3

CSU was again the site for our Wagga School Leaders Program on April 9th. Module 3 focused on the various aspects of interpersonal skills and how to improve them. One of the student Energizer groups took on running an energizer with a lot of fun bursting balloons tied to each person’s ankles. Students also learned about the DISC Model of communication and behaviour, the characteristics of each style as well as effective things to do and what to avoid in communicating with each style. Each participant then self-selected their dominant style.

Today was a big day as participants also got to meet their Mentors. Mentors from local businesses and government donate their time generously to work with the students, offering wisdom from their own work and life experience as well as ongoing support.

“I was given many valuable insights during my first mentoring session. The most valuable was that success does not need to be defined by achievements and quantitative factors, but instead through self-fulfillment. I was also caused to consider how different generations interact with each other, and why the differences in our 'culture' exist.” MG

“Another thing both my mentors said was just talk to people everywhere. The more connections you have the more opportunities will come your way. For me I enjoyed being able to hear their stories and how they got to where they are today.” MP

“I enjoyed talking with my mentor about simpler ways to implement a better mindset into my life, taking smaller steps to help myself grow as a person and as a leader.” DC

“Having a knowledge of the DISC model and the four behavioural styles is very useful in all sorts of situations. When leading a team, knowing and recognising the different styles, could be useful to help cater to all of the different needs of your team. It can also be useful when dealing with difficult people.” BG
