Wagga School Leaders Program Module 5

Module 5 of the Wagga School Leaders Program - Me and my place in the City of Wagga Wagga was held on 16th May. This module is designed to enhance the students understanding of our City, and to consider its challenges and opportunities into the future while getting a better understanding of the history.

Isaac Bloor asks a question of Aunty Mary Atkinson during a tour of the Wiradjuri section of the Museum of the Riverina.

The day began at the Museum of the Riverina with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Mary Atkinson and a tour of the Wiradjuri exhibition which involved many interesting facts relating to aboriginal culture and history. Angus and Sam from the Museum then took the students on a tour providing them with information such as the importance of the Murrumbidgee River to the region. The students were entertained with many engaging stories while exploring the exhibits at the Museum, such as the School House.

The students were then treated to presentations from City of Wagga Mayor Cr Dallas Tout and Business Chamber Manager Sally Manning. The presentations included information about completed and ongoing projects within the city.

Sally Manning provided the students with a thorough summary of the many projects happening with and around Wagga Wagga.

The afternoon session was hosted by Enirgi Power Storage & Recycling (Enirgi) where students were educated on the activities at Enirgi and the many uses for the products extracted from recycled batteries. The students were joined for lunch by mentors from the local community. The mentor session is designed to assist the students to better understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with living and working in a regional area as they embrace being the next generation of business leaders, entrepreneurs and change-makers.

The day concluded with an inspirational presentation by Scott Reardon OAM on resilience. Scott is an Australian Paralympic T42 sprinter and World Title Water Skiier. Scott related well with each of the students who asked many questions. Scott was able to give the students helpful hints to work on being more present in the moment. Scott left the students with four important components to consider when faced with adversity:

1.      Support network: when adversity hits, who do you turn to?

2.      Mindfulness: our breath is the key pillar to becoming resilient.

3.      Purpose: when we know why, it gives us direction.

4.      Gratitude: how awesome is it to feel good? Gratitude can get you there more often.
