Marshalls Creek Bridge Upgrade

In September 2021 Transport for NSW released the Detailed Design and Review of Environmental Factors for the planned Marshalls Creek Upgrade. The Marshall’s Creek Upgrade forms part of the Transport for NSW Draft Wagga Wagga Transport Plan which members were invited to provide feedback on in April - May 2020.

Numerous reports have identified the Marshalls Creek Bridge on the Sturt Highway as a congestion point. The plan released by Transport for NSW involves the replacement of the current two-lane bridge with a new four-lane bridge, with a shared pedestrian pathway (for pedestrians and cyclists), and a second footpath for pedestrians. As shown in the Transport for NSW image provided, the existing underpass which is part of the Wiradjuri Walking Trail will be retained.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole stated, ‘We’re working to ease congestion and reduce the bottleneck for vehicles travelling on the Sturt Highway during peak times, due to traffic currently merging from four lanes to two and back to four.’

The $9.5 million four-lane bridge will improve traffic flow leading on to the bridge, and also boost safety for pedestrians and cyclists with an improved upstream shared path and extra downstream footpath.’

Committee for Wagga asked Peter Braneley of Ron Crouch Transport for his thoughts on the upgrade:

'Ron Crouch Transport welcomes the announcement of the Marshall’s Creek Bridge Upgrade & confirmation of the expected completion date by mid-2024.

The bridge upgrade will provide significant safety outcomes for all road users & pedestrians.

We strongly encourage Transport for NSW to ensure that this upgrade also future proofs our cities road infrastructure, along with the wider state & national road network, by ensuring that the detailed bridge design allows for the use of Higher Productivity Freight Vehicles.

The ability to operate Higher Productivity Freight Vehicles on this asset will only lead to further productivity gains & therefore safety outcomes for our community as the direct result of reduced heavy vehicle movements.

We look forward to the project being delivered and the subsequent community benefits being realised.'

- Peter Braneley, Ron Crouch Transport

The Marshalls Creek Bridge Upgrade project has a $9.5 million budget funded by the NSW Government. Construction is expected to commence in late-2022 and be completed by mid-2024.
