Lights 4 Lake – Maximising One Of Wagga Wagga’s Best Assets

The Committee for Wagga (C4Waggga) has applied for and received a grant of $40,000 from the NSW State Government as seed capital to fund a solar powered lighting project at Lake Albert.

C4Wagga has additionally proposed that the Wagga Wagga City Council be part of a joint venture to install 75 solar powered lights around the 5.5 kilometre walkway. This would enhance the ascetics of Lake Albert and provide beneficial improvements to its usability.  Council has been asked to contribute $75,000 to the project with the balance of $115,000 coming from the community through a “buy a light” program to be managed by C4Wagga.  The total estimated cost of the project is $230,000.

During the winter months it is difficult for working women in particular, to find a safe location in Wagga to exercise.  Lights on the lake would enable women to utilise this facility.

Helen Mundy (President, Women’s Health Centre) said, “Many women do not feel safe walking after dark in areas which do not have lighting. Solar lighting the path around Lake Albert would make this recreational area more appealing to women who want to exercise outside of daylight hours.”

Judy Galloway (Chair of C4Wagga) said, “This initiative came from a young participant in our Emerging Leaders Program and we see great benefits and potential in the proposal. It will not only improve safety, it will add additional leisure time to all who use the facility, walkers, joggers and cyclists”.

Chris Fitzpatrick (CEO of C4Wagga) said “this will be a great asset for our city and community and a good example of Government, Council and Community working together for united outcomes, featuring the use of solar power.  We are encouraged by the feedback on the project, and we look forward to the project becoming a reality”.
