Members' Strategic Planning Session

Thank you to all members who attended and contributed to the Members’ Strategic Planning Session held on Thursday 9th September 2021. This session was an opportunity for members to contribute to the future direction of Committee for Wagga and voice their opinion on our projects, current and future.

Members were invited to complete a member survey in advance of the session to assist in directing the conversation. Those members who were unable to attend were also invited to complete the survey to ensure their thoughts were known.

The session was lead by CEO Brett Somerville and, based on the feedback from the Members’ Survey and during the discussion, key areas highlighted were:

  • Increasing the use of local contractors and businesses in government works, aiming to have a greater portion of government spending staying within the Wagga Wagga economy.

  • City Planning and Development and the need for the Planning Act to consider the differences in city planning and development between our major cities and regional areas.

  • Advocating for key road and infrastructure projects to increase safety and livability whilst decreasing congestion on key transport corridors within our city. This includes the duplication of the Gobbagombalin Bridge (or a similar alternative), an Alternate Route, Glenfield Road upgrades and the Wagga Wagga Airport.

  • The need to engage with the State Government and the Regional Growth & Development Corporation regarding the next steps and future planning at the Special Activation Precinct and Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics Hub.

  • The underutilisation of Lake Albert as a destination for residents and visitors alike and the opportunities that may be available once consistency of water supply is resolved.

  • The current shortage of skilled and unskilled labour and the impact this is having on businesses locally and throughout the Riverina.

  • The current housing shortage and housing affordability and the impact this will have on Wagga Wagga’s ability to attract workers and grow as a city.

  • The opportunity for Wagga Wagga to benefit from the Tourism industry and the ways in which this could be better supported at a local level.

Based on these discussions, Committee for Wagga will produce a targeted survey asking members for feedback on the above items and other projects discussed with the aim to define our role in pursuing these projects.
