Smallmon Brothers Waste
Overview of your business
Smallmon Brothers Waste is a family-owned and operated waste and recycling business proudly servicing the Riverina and the ACT.
Since 2012, we've grown from a small local operation into one of the region's most trusted waste management providers. Today, we employ 45 local people, operate a fleet of more than 40 trucks and work with businesses, councils, builders, developers, primary producers and households across the region.
Alongside our collection services, we operate our own recycling facility, recovering construction and demolition materials including concrete, bricks and rubble. Our focus is simple: provide reliable waste solutions, do the job properly and help build a cleaner, more sustainable future for our region.
What is your business focus?
We focus on providing practical, reliable waste and recycling solutions that make life easier for our customers and deliver better outcomes for the environment.
Whether it's a skip bin on a building site, commercial waste collection for a local business or recovering materials through our recycling facility, we believe waste should be managed responsibly and efficiently.
We're committed to finding better ways to recover resources, reduce landfill and support the communities we serve. Most importantly, we're committed to delivering the sort of service people can rely on every day.
What are your current opportunities and challenges?
There has never been a greater focus on sustainability, recycling and responsible resource recovery, creating significant opportunities for businesses like ours.
More organisations are looking for practical ways to reduce waste and improve environmental outcomes, which is driving demand for innovative recycling and recovery solutions. Our recycling facility continues to play an important role in helping divert valuable materials from landfill and giving those resources a second life.
Like many regional businesses, we also face challenges including workforce attraction and retention, rising operating costs, changing regulations and the increasing demand for infrastructure to support regional growth. We see those challenges as opportunities to keep improving, investing in our people and equipment, and delivering even better outcomes for our customers and communities.
What are the broader opportunities and challenges for Wagga?
Wagga Wagga has always been built on strong local businesses, hard-working people and a community that's prepared to back itself.
One of the biggest opportunities for the region is continued investment in industry, infrastructure and local business. As Wagga grows, there is enormous potential to create jobs, attract new investment and strengthen industries that have long been the backbone of the Riverina.
With that growth comes responsibility. The region needs the infrastructure, workforce and services to support future demand while maintaining the lifestyle that makes Wagga such a great place to live and work. Like many regional centres, attracting and retaining skilled workers remains a challenge, as does ensuring local businesses can continue to grow in an increasingly competitive environment.
We're optimistic about the future. Wagga has a strong business community, great people and plenty of opportunity ahead. By continuing to work together and invest in the region, we can help ensure it remains a thriving regional centre for generations to come.
What are your achievements?
Since starting in 2012, we've grown from a small local operation into one of the Riverina's most trusted waste and recycling businesses.
A major milestone in our journey came when we outgrew our original yard. It was a clear sign that customers were backing us, the business was growing and it was time to invest in the future. That growth has allowed us to expand our services, create local jobs, build our fleet, develop our recycling capability and continue supporting customers across the Riverina and the ACT.
While we're proud of the trucks, equipment and facilities we've built along the way, our greatest achievement is the reputation we've earned. Trust isn't something you can buy. It's built through hard work, reliability and doing what you say you'll do. Becoming a trusted name across the Riverina is something we're incredibly proud of and something we work hard to maintain every day.
What element of your business makes you most proud?
The relationships we've built.
We're proud of the growth we've achieved since 2012, but what matters most is the trust we've earned along the way. In our industry, relationships are everything. Whether it's a local builder, a council, a farmer, a business owner or a family hiring a skip bin, people need to know they can rely on us to get the job done.
Many of our customers have been with us for years. They've watched us grow from a small local operation into the business we are today, and we've grown alongside them.
We're also proud of the team we've built. With 45 local people working across the business, we've created a workplace where hard work, respect and reliability matter. Seeing our people take pride in what they do every day and knowing we're providing long-term local employment is something we're incredibly proud of.
Why is your business involved with Committee 4 Wagga?
We're involved with Committee 4 Wagga because we believe strong regions are built by people who are willing to roll their sleeves up and contribute.
The Riverina has been good to us. It's where we've built our business, employed local people and formed lasting relationships with customers and communities right across the region. Being part of Committee 4 Wagga gives us an opportunity to support the continued growth and success of the place we call home.
We don't pretend to have all the answers, but we do believe local businesses should be part of the conversation. If we can contribute our experience, support good initiatives and help create opportunities for future generations, then that's worth being involved in.
At the end of the day, we want to see Wagga and the wider Riverina continue to thrive. That's good for local businesses, good for local families and good for the future of the region.
