Wagga School Leaders Program - Module 5

Module 5 of the Wagga School Leaders Program - Me and my place in the City of Wagga Wagga was held on Tuesday 10th May 2022. This module is designed to enhance the students understanding of our City, its history and future.

The day began at the Wagga Wagga Beach with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Mary Atkinson, from Wiradjuri and Ngunnawal Country, and Luke Wighton, from Wiradjuri Country, who inspired the group by playing the digeridoo. Aunty Mary and Luke provided the students with insights about their personal histories, aboriginal culture and their own experiences of leadership.

Greg Conkey OAM, former Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, then provided the students with a brief history of Wagga Wagga followed by a walking tour incorporating some of the historical buildings of the CBD. The Wagga Wagga Beach, levee bank, the Riverine Club, the Wagga Wagga Court House and the old Council Chambers were some of the aspects covered during the tour. Greg shared his knowledge about Wagga Wagga and held the student’s captive with stories providing some of the finer details about Wagga Wagga’s history.

Students shifted gear, enjoying a bus tour, again lead by Greg Conkey, travelling through the Bomen Industrial Precinct, noting the infrastructure and businesses in the area.

The students were treated to an onsite tour of the Riverina Intermodal Freight and Logistics (RiFL) Hub which is currently under construction. RiFL Project Managers, Andrea Crossley and Matthew Casley provided the group with the history and objectives of the RiFL Hub which is currently the largest infrastructure project undertaken by the Wagga Wagga City Council. Those interested in engineering were able to ask questions about the potential future hydrogen capabilities of the site.

The students then travelled to Enirgi Power Storage Recycling where they spent the afternoon. Matt Morton explained the role of sustainability in Enirgi Power Storage Recycling’s approach to business.

Jum Lamont, from JUMPSTART, delivered an interactive and compelling session over the course of the afternoon focussing on exploring the student’s personal leadership and interpersonal skills. This was achieved through a number of activities which challenged the students ability to effectively communicate an idea as well as their ability to listen with the objective of understanding the information being delivered.
